GINA by BMW makes you think about future cars

Design is all around us and takes on many shapes and forms. As consumers of product goods we express ourselves by the stuff we use in our daily lives, one such product is the car we drive.

A few nights ago watching the Science Channel I was introduced to GINA, a BMW future concept vehicle that at first looks like a Z4 roadster. What makes Gina special is a flexible outer SKIN that departs from rigid sheet metal. The SKIN is wrapped around the car’s structural cage which contains moving parts, as the cage moves so does the SKIN. The automation of the car’s SKIN, body panels, allows it to transform into different shapes. Noticeably the passenger doors open up and a ripple is made in the SKIN at the hinge location, the headlights can be closed or opened, the hood opens from the center top-outwards, the trunk expands based on storage needs.

The design of GINA is clearly innovative and provacative, making the car more personalized beyond adding body kits and off the shelf enblems. Perhaps one day automakers will produce cars like GINA so we can best express ourselves on the road.
